Ian Harvey

Ian Harvey’s practice draws largely on his expertise in public and administrative law coronial and other inquiries, Royal Commissions, tort liability of public authorities, aviation regulation and dispute resolution.

Ian graduated in law from the Australian National University in 1974 and completed a Master in Law from Osgoode Hall Law School in Canada in 1981. He was a research fee student at London School of Economics in 1986.

Ian worked in Canberra with the Attorney-General’s Department and the Australian Government Solicitor from 1975 to 1989 before joining the Bar. Ian has also had two short-term appointments as Corporate Counsel with the former Civil Aviation Authority and with the former Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales. Ian has represented clients in the Federal Court, NSW Supreme Court and the AAT. He has also represented clients in numerous coronial inquests and inquiries throughout Australia and has appeared as counsel assisting various coroners in NSW and Queensland in a number of aviation and other death related inquests. He has appeared for clients in various Royal Commissions including the Equine Influenza Inquiry and the Royal Commission into the Home Insulation Program.

Ian was, for some 14 years, a section editor of the Australian Journal of Administrative Law and has delivered papers at various seminars and conference on administrative and public law topics. including aviation regulation, Government liability and investigations and inquiries. He is co-author of the Thomson Reuters publication “Investigating Crime – the Law of Australia” and the loose-leaf segment of The Laws of Australia on Royal Commissions and Public Inquiries, Since August 2015, Ian has held an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Law School of the University of Notre Dame Australia and has lectured at the UNDA Law School’s Sydney campus and for the Law Extension Committee program at the University of Sydney.
